CASTRO'S BIG DEBUT
Providence transfer Rafael Castro dominated the interior against Mercyhurst, making 6-of-8 shots en route to a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double that also featured four assists and two steals.
Castro, who played sparingly for two years at PC, was one of just eight players nationally on opening night to post at least 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists against a Division I opponent. In the process of his second career double-double, and first since Dec. 10, 2022 vs. Albany, Castro set new career highs in points, field goals (tied), rebounds (tied), assists and minutes played.

SHIFT IN IDENTITY
Known for its 3-point prowess the last two years, including making a school record 287 triples last year, GW was just 4-of-23 (17.4%) in Monday's season opener beyond the arc. It marked the first GW win while shooting below 20% from beyond the arc since Dec. 13, 2021 vs. Radford (4-of-21, 19%).
Instead, the Buff & Blue posted one of its best offensive rebounding games in recent memory, securing 15 offensive boards and outrebounding the Lakers by 11 overall (40-29). GW's 15 offensive rebounds were the most since Dec. 7, 2020 (16 vs. UMBC), and led directly to 25 second-chance points, the most in the 66 games played under Coach Caputo.
GW secured 45.5% of its own misses on Monday, the 12th-highest rate in the country on opening night per KenPom, and the team's highest percentage since March 8, 2018 vs. Saint Louis.

A LOOK AT THE PIRATES
Hampton opened its season with a 110-53 thrashing of Mid-Atlantic Christian on Monday evening. Daniel Johnson led six Pirates in double figures with 19 points vs. the Mustangs, while Kyrese Mullen authored a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Ivan Thomas is in his first year in charge of HU after most recently serving as an assistant at Georgetown and Providence, both under Ed Cooley. Thomas' team features just two returners, but one is Mullen, a Preseason First Team All-CAA selection.
Noah Farrakhan (West Virginia) and Wayne Bristol Jr. (Georgetown) are two high-major transfers looking to bolster the roster for the Pirates. Farrakhan has scored over 1,000 points in his career at three different stops, and Bristol began his career at Howard where he was the 2020 MEAC Rookie of the Year.
Hampton was picked to finish last (14th) in the CAA preseason poll following a 9-24 (3-15) season a year ago. In two years since joining the CAA from the Big South, HU is 18-48 overall and 8-28 in league.
