WASHINGTON - After a quiet first half offensively on Friday night at the Smith Center, GW men's basketball scorched the nets in the final 20 minutes to run away from visiting Hampton, 82-54, improving to 2-0 in the season's first week.
GW led by just eight, 44-36, six minutes into the second half but went on a scintillating 15-2 burst in the next three minutes that was spurred on the defensive end with a pair of steals that led to breakaway dunks. The Buff & Blue made six of seven shots in the stretch to push the lead over 20, where it didn't drop below the rest of the night.
The Revolutionaries made 13 of their first 20 shots after intermission en route to a 58% showing in the second half and ended up shooting 47% overall on the night. The balanced attack featured six players in double figures, led by Trey Autry off the bench with a career-high 14 points on an efficient 4-of-6 shooting (2-of-4 3s).
Darren Buchanan Jr. double-doubled for the second time in as many games with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while redshirt freshman Christian Jones showed his complete two-way game with 11 points, four rebounds and four steals.
Gerald Drumgoole Jr. (13 points), Jacoi Hutchinson (12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and Rafael Castro (10 points, 5 rebounds) also found their way into double digits for the Buff & Blue.
The defensive effort was also impeccable for GW, limiting Hampton to just 28.8% shooting on the night, including a ghastly 9-of-39 (23%) in the opening half that allowed GW to find its footing and take a 32-24 lead into the break. It marked the lowest shooting percentage for a GW opponent since Coppin State (26%) last December.
GW will look to keep the good vibes rolling on Tuesday night when it welcomes another CAA foe to the Smith Center in North Carolina A&T. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
