Men’s Basketball Pushes Past North Carolina A&T, 85-80
11/12/2024 10:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - For the third time in three games this season, sophomore Darren Buchanan Jr. double-doubled, this time in the 20-and-10 variety, leading GW men's basketball to an 85-80 win against a North Carolina A&T team that would not go away quietly.
After the Revolutionaries took a 44-33 lead into the locker room at halftime, A&T fought back and took a three-point second half lead midway through the closing half, but behind a free throw effort that saw GW make 12-of-13 freebies in the final 20 minutes (16-of-18 overall), George Washington escaped the scare to emerge victorious.
Providence transfer Rafael Castro continues to acquit himself in fine fashion to the Smith Center faithful, double-doubling in his own right with a dozen points and matching, game-high 12 rebounds (five offensive). Getting it done on both ends of the floor, the athletic big man had a trio of blocks and steals, as well, pacing his squad in both categories.
The GW Revs got busy in the paint all night long, connecting on 24-of-39 twos to outweigh a 7-of-25 night from deep, outdoing the opposition up close by a 48-28 margin, thanks to the Buchanan-Castro pairing.
In the backcourt, sophomore Jacoi Hutchinson and Gerald Drumgoole Jr. (via Delaware) made the winning plays late, combining for 32 points with Hutchinson accounting for eight of GW's free throw makes on his nine attempts from the stripe.
Up next for GW in the non-conference slate lies NJIT, who visits Foggy Bottom next Monday. Prior to the 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+, GW Athletics will host a free Miracle on 22nd Street Tailgate beginning at 4:30pm, sponsored by Northwest Federal Credit Union.
