Men’s Basketball Opens Season with Double-Digit Win Vs. Mercyhurst, 76-59
11/4/2024 11:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - After having a freshman campaign as strong as anyone in the conference, Darren Buchanan Jr. showed off why he was deserving of a preseason All A-10 nod going into his sophomore campaign with an all-around 19-point, 10-rebound, 3-steal effort, double-doubling with his game-high in thefts in GW men's basketball's eventual rout against Mercyhurst.
What started slow for the Revolutionaries and led to a 29-29 knotted score at the half, turned into a rousing win late after the 8 p.m. local time tip.
Providence transfer Rafael Castro provided the highlights and was also a stat-sheet-stuffer Monday with 16-points, a game-high tying 10 rebounds with Buchanan, and in demonstration of his big man-ball-handling abilities, dished a game-high tying four assists.
Buchanan and Castro's dueling double-doubles were the punctuation, while Trey Moss chipped in with veteran consistency, allowing Head Coach Chris Caputo to give his bench some run late. Moss, who joined the program from William & Mary in the offseason, had 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting in his starting combo guard role, making 4-of-5 free throws in the process.
True freshman Ty Bevins, redshirt freshman Christian Jones and Cornell transfer Sean Hansen each scored three points in their debuts in Buff & Blue, for a GW team that couldn't find the range from deep (4-of-23), but otherwise shot a blistering .667 (20-of-30) from inside the arc.
George Washington was able to extend a lead and put the game away largely because of volume at the free throw line, attacking consistently to earn trips to the stripe. GW made more freebies (24) than Mercyhurst attempted (13) to win the game-within-the-game in the free throw battle.
The GW Revs next matchup comes on Friday night at home against Hampton, with tip-time at Smith Center coming at 7pm. Byron Kerr and Jimmy Patsos will have the call on ESPN+.
