WASHINGTON - Looking to get back in the win column and climb back above .500 after a narrow setback across the city at Howard on Friday, GW welcomed in VU-Lynchburg Monday. In overcoming a slowish start against the undersized Dragons who came ready to battle, the Revolutionaries surged on a 62-to-6 run after the visitors drew even at 23-23 in the second.
Closing the second with the quarter's final dozen, then opening the third with the first 11, GW did as was expected of a team that had lost its first three games of the year by an average of 55.5 points per game in defeats at the hands of Georgetown, Auburn and Clinton College. The 28-6 third quarter advantage for George Washington allowed Head Coach Caroline McCombs to get her bench invaluable court time to gain experience in the final 10 minutes. A 22-0 start to the final quarter gave George Washington that same 55+ point edge, albeit coming in the form of a 62-6 spurt after the game was knotted.
Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Gabby Reynolds sat for the duration of the fourth, ending her night after three with eight points and three assists in 24 minutes of action.
Grad student Makayla Andrews also checked out after three, departing the game with a team-high 16 points and four assists at the time, along with eight rebounds.
The late third and early fourth allowed first-year Miriam Diala to show what she can do in a leading role, as after representing Germany in multiple international events prior to coming to GW, she was dominant in her most extensive collegiate action to date. With team-highs of 18 points (7-of-8 FG) and 10 rebounds in just 11 minutes of floor time, Diala gave the GW faithful a glimpse of what four years with a Reynolds-Diala ticket could look like.
GW now leaves the District for the first time this season to take on Ohio on Saturday in Athens, OH, at noon. The next home game for the GW Revs women's hoopers comes on Wednesday, Nov. 20th, against Towson at 6 p.m., live on Monumental Network and ESPN+.
