Volleyball Outlasts Saint Louis

WASHINGTON - In a thrilling five sets, the GW volleyball team defeated the Saint Louis Billikens on Friday evening in the Smith Center, improving to 7-6 in A-10 play.
BY THE NUMBERS
As a team, the GW Revs put down 59 kills Friday evening, led by Salem Yohannes who earned 16 across the five sets. Following behind Yohannes were Taylor Treahy who swung for 13 and MC Daubendiek with 10. At setter, Abby Markworth led the Buff & Blue with 24 assists. On defense, Yohannes and Cianna Tejada each contributed four blocks, while Reilly Heinrich chipped in 17 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first, GW got off to a slow start, trailing the Billikens for most of the frame. Despite tying the score twice, the Revolutionaries eventually fell to Saint Louis, 25-17.
Battling back in the second, the two teams played to extra points and the set featured 11 tied scores and three lead changes. With GW out-hitting SLU 17-11, the Revolutionaries claimed the second at 29-27.
With the momentum shift, the Buff & Blue led the match for the entirety of the third frame, allowing SLU to tie the match only twice before claiming it 25-17. The third was also GW's most efficient, with the team swinging behind a .290 hitting percentage across 14 kills.
In the fourth, Saint Louis began to regain momentum, posing a challenge to the Revolutionaries. The fourth featured an additional three lead changes as GW fought hard, but ultimately relinquished the frame to Saint Louis at 25-23, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
To begin the fifth, Saint Louis opened up the scoring, but a kill from Treahy tied things up. With an additional four ties, the Revolutionaries were able to put down six kills to claim the deciding set at 15-8 over the Billikens.
After claiming the victory, GW will turn its attention to the series finale with the Billikens at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon in the Smith Center.
