After defeating No. 20 Navy on Friday, Bucknell on Saturday - a team who was receiving votes in the national polls - and then dismissing Mount Saint Mary's on Sunday, the George Washington water polo team, who was also receiving votes in the latest national polls, seems poised to break down the door that it had been knocking on when the next poll is released Wednesday.
(RV) GW 13, No. 20 Navy 12
Looking for its fifth-straight win in conference action, the Revolutionaries played host to No. 20 Navy at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va. The Midshipmen did well to start the match, holding a 9-7 lead at half, and extending their lead to 12-9 after three quarters. The final eight minutes were all GW, as the Revolutionaries came storming back with four fourth-quarter goals, while holding Navy scoreless in the last frame.
Antonio Florena led the way on offense with a team-high five goals and three assists, while Adonis Vlassis (three goals, one assist) and Yam Kabakov (two goals, one assist) also had strong production on the offensive end. Goalkeeper Luca Castorina was tough to beat all night, making eight saves, including a crucial save in the waning moments, and adding three assists to his ledger.
(RV) GW 12, (RV) Bucknell 10
The Revolutionaries picked up their sixth-consecutive win on Saturday afternoon when they took down (RV) Bucknell, 12-10, at the Smith Center. Both offenses started to roll in the second quarter after a slow start to the match, which culminated in a 7-4 GW lead at halftime. The Revolutionaries never gave up their advantage in the second half, keeping a multiple goal buffer over the Bison, on their way to a 12-10 advantage.
Kabakov paced the GW Revs with five goals and one assist, while Andrija Sekulic supported GDUB's efforts with four goals and one assist. Castorina locked down GW's goal with 15 saves to limit Bucknell to just 10 goals.
(RV) GW 17, Mount St. Mary's 11
Going for the weekend sweep and its seventh victory in-a-row, George Washington left no doubt in a 17-11 takedown of Mount St. Mary's on Sunday at Navy. Vlasis found the back of the net five times, with three coming before halftime as GW held a 12-6 at the break. A 5-5 second half just wound down the clock to what the GW Revs hope is inevitable - a national ranking come Wednesday. Sekulic, Florena and first-year Joseph McCreary chipped in with three tallies apiece.
UP NEXT
