WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team nears the home stretch of the regular season with two pivotal road matchups. The Revolutionaries will first travel to Fordham to battle the Rams on Thursday, then set their sights on Davidson for a Sunday bout. Both matches will be carried live on ESPN+.
A-10 STANDINGS UPDATE
With just four matches left in the regular season, the Revolutionaries sit squarely in the mix for a spot in the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship. With the top eight teams receiving a spot in the conference postseason, GW currently occupies the eighth seed with a 2-3-1 conference record. Dayton sits atop the league with a 5-1 A-10 record, while Saint Louis (4-0-2) and Loyola Chicago (3-0-4) sit just behind as the only unbeaten teams left. Three of GW's four matches are against teams lower than the Revolutionaries in the current standings, with the only team higher being GW's Thursday opponent, Fordham, who sits at 3-2-2. A full breakdown of current A-10 standings can be found here.
BILAL DELIVERS IN A BIG SPOT
In the first 13 matches this year, first-year Julia Bilal hadn't yet scored her first collegiate goal. In a big spot last week in the team's match against Richmond, Bilal picked the perfect time to come through. In the 53rd minute of a 1-1 stalemate, Bilal headed in a corner kick from teammate Alicia Window to put the Buff & Blue on top. The goal proved to be the game-winner, as the Revolutionaries kept Richmond off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match. Bilal now has three points on the season after picking up an assist earlier in the year, while Window tallied her first assist of 2024.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Fordham enters the regular season's penultimate week with an 8-4-3 overall record and a 3-2-2 mark in the A-10 conference. Led by third-year Head Coach Magnus Nilerud, Fordham's leading scorer this season is Liina Tervo, with nine goals and seven assists. She's recorded 25 total points and taken 38 shots on the year. Julia Acosta has six goals and 15 total points, while Abby Borchers has tallied four goals and 10 points. Defensively, Addison Green has started in 11 of the team's 15 matches this year. She holds a goals-allowed average of 0.91 and has tallied 38 saves this season.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
The Wildcats currently hold a 6-6-3 overall record and a 2-4-1 mark in conference play. Coming off a 1-0 loss at Loyola Chicago last Sunday, Davidson will not play again until facing the Revolutionaries this weekend. The Wildcats are led by Head Coach Riley Piechnick, who's in her second season with the program in 2024. Her top scorer this season is Maddy Moody with six goals on the year. Moody has registered 15 shots, 10 of which were on target. Dakota Lyons has four goals and three assists, while Sophia Whiddon is responsible for two goals and four assists. Emily Smith has played all 15 matches for Davidson as the team's keeper. She's notched 60 saves, a 1.01 goals-allowed average and holds an 80.0% save percentage.
