Men's Basketball Downed at No. 21/19 Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - GW men's basketball faced its toughest test of the season on Tuesday night, traveling to a historically tough place to play in UD Arena against a nationally-ranked foe in No. 21/19 Dayton. After an early back-and-forth, GW was unable to generate much offense, falling 83-61 for its fourth-straight setback.
GW found itself down just 12-9 after 10 minutes thanks to a strong defensive effort, forcing the Flyers to miss 12 of their first 16 shots from the field. However, UD awoke and scored the next 12 points to assume a 24-9 cushion. The Revolutionaries would score seven straight to bring the deficit down to eight, but another 5-0 spurt from the home side pushed the lead back into double digits for good.
For the fourth-straight game, GW struggled on the offensive end as it shot a season-low 32.3%. In particular, the 3-point shooting doomed the Revolutionaries, as they made just 5-of-29 from beyond the arc.
Darren Buchanan Jr. led the GW Revs with 13 points and eight rebounds, his team-leading 18th game in double figures this season. James Bishop IV chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Dayton shot an efficient 48% from the floor and canned 12 3-pointers at a 50% rate. Daron Holmes scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, adding in 11 rebounds. Koby Brea and Nate Santos added 17 apiece, hitting 8-of-13 from beyond the arc.
GW will take the remainder of the week off from competition before kicking off February with a pair of home games next week at the Smith Center. Rhode Island visits D.C. next Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip followed by a 12 p.m. Saturday clash with Loyola Chicago on Hall of Fame and Men's Basketball Alumni weekend.
