Men’s Basketball Downed by Rhode Island, 88-65

WASHINGTON - A midseason skid continued for the GW Revs on Tuesday night in a 88-65 defeat to the visiting Rhode Island Rams. With the setback George Washington falls to 3-6 in the A-10 (14-8 overall) at the statistical midpoint of the conference slate. A win would have put George Washington into a 7th-place tie in the 15-team league, as the team now looks ahead to the back half of the Atlantic 10 slate with plenty of time still to climb the standings ahead of next month's conference tournament in Brooklyn.
Rookie standout Darren Buchanan Jr. once again played beyond his years, with a team-high 23 points and a team-high tying six rebounds in the absence of fellow standout first-year Garrett Johnson. Buchanan shot 9-of-13 on the night, while Maximus Edwards also found his way into double-figures with 18, but they were outdone by a scintillating performance from URI's Zek Montgomery. The Bradley transfer came to D.C., averaging just over nine points per game, but went off for a career-high 30 points on an efficient 11-of-14 night from the floor.
GW did hold a halftime lead, 37-35, after leading by as many as 10 in the opening minutes. Minus Johnson, GW's lack of depth showed as it was outdone by Rhode Island's reserves, 34-8.
GW gets another chance at a team it's chasing in the standings when Loyola Chicago visits Saturday. The noon tip at Smith Center on Monumental Sports Network will include a visit from GW legend Carl Elliott, who will be enshrined into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame Friday night.
