WASHINGTON – Coming on the heels of a 2-0 win over UMBC, the George Washington women's soccer team looks to continue its hot start to the 2023 season against Howard and American this week. The Revolutionaries will suit up against the Bison on Thursday, Sept. 7, for a 4:30 p.m. match at the GW Soccer Field and will also host American on Sunday, Sept. 10, for a 1 p.m. contest. Both matches will be available on ESPN+.
SIZZLING START
After Sunday's 2-0 win over UMBC, GW now sits at 3-1-1 on the season. Leading the way for the Revolutionaries are sophomore Aoi Kataoka and junior Kelly Poole, who each have a team-high five points thus far. Both players have near identical numbers on the year, tallying one goal, three assists, and 15 shots each to lead GW's offense. Three assists on the season puts both players in a tie for 43rd nationally across all of Division I.
Also finding a fast start on offense this season are junior Caitlin Cunningham, sophomore Isabel Kelly and first-year Abby Caoile. All three players have a team-high two goals. As a team, GW has tallied 13 goals on the year, over halfway to last year's total of 23 across the entire season. Defensively, GW has tallied two clean sheets on the year. The first came in the Revolutionaries' 7-0 season-opening win over Delaware State, while the second came on Sunday in the aforementioned 2-0 victory over UMBC. Graduate student Rose Hemans tallied the win in net over the Retrievers, marking her first career shutout.
SCOUTING THE BISON
Howard enters Thursday's matchup sitting at 2-2-1 on the season after most recently defeating Longwood 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Howard, a member of the Northeast Conference for women's soccer, looks to rebound from a 2022 season that saw them finish 3-11-2. Historically, GW is undefeated against the Bison, holding a 7-0-1 record in their eight matchups. Last year, GW got the best of the Bison, beating them 2-1 to keep the unbeaten streak alive.
Entering Thursday's match, Howard is led by senior Marli Berry with seven points on the year. Berry, a native of Orangevale, Calif., has two goals and three assists on 13 shots this season. Also contributing to Howard's offense early on is junior Melea Earley. Earley has three goals and one assist thus far and was responsible for the lone goal GW conceded to the Bison in last year's matchup. Defensively, the Bison are anchored by first-year goalkeeper Trinity Knox. Knox has played all but 45 minutes this season and has 25 saves on the year. Knox boasts a .833 save percentage and has a goals-allowed average of 1.11.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
American enters the week with a record of 0-3-2 after suffering a 3-0 loss to Auburn on Sunday. The Eagles have yet to score a goal through five matches this season, earning two scoreless draws against Maryland and Longwood. The Eagles are coming off a 2022 season where they finished 3-6-6, including a scoreless draw with GW in last year's home-opener. Historically, GW holds a 14-5-2 record over American. Before traveling to GW on Sunday, American will square off with fellow A-10 member Richmond at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Defensively, American is led by junior goalkeeper Julia Kato. Kato has played every minute for the Eagles this season and has tallied 19 saves with two shutouts. Kato has a save percentage of .679 and holds a goals-allowed average of 1.80.
