Adams sets school record with nine 3-pointers, three Colonials post double-doubles
WASHINGTON - Wednesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center was one for the record books.
In a game that featured a little bit of everything, the scoreboard got a workout and GW got a win, a double-overtime thriller to avenge a loss last month at Richmond and break a three-game skid to get back above .500 at 6-5 in A-10 play with seven games to play before March's conference tournament in Brooklyn.
Brendan Adams and James Bishop IV were the headliners, as Adams set a new school record with nine made 3-pointers and Bishop registered his first career double-double in his Player of the Year bid. Adams finished with a career-high 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting (9-of-12 threes) on a night when the proverbial zone he was in was without range.
Bishop, meanwhile, had a career-high 10 assists and yet another 30+ night, as his 33 points combined with Adams to give the Buff and Blue the first duo to both net 30 in the same game since at least 2010.
A slight delay with the net in front of Richmond's bench in the first half -- expertly addressed by GW Facilities' crack crew of Andrew Lundt, Nicole Feliz and Sean Cole -- couldn't stop either team's hot shooting. Both team's shot over 50% from the floor and combined to hit 26 three-pointers, with GW nearly hitting at a 50% clip from three (14-of-29).
Adams, after entering halftime with five points, erupted for 30 in the final half and two extra sessions, while Ricky Lindo Jr., and Maximus Edwards both threw up monster numbers of their own. Both double-doubled as Lindo's 18 points and 13 rebounds helped GW rack up 46 points in the paint, while Edwards career-high 16 rebounds to go along with his 11 points furthered his claim as the league's top rookie. In the process, Edwards matched the school record with 15 defensive rebounds shared by two others, most recently Yinka Dare twice as part of the newly-minted Hall of Fame Sweet Sixteen team in 1992-93.
With pro scouts in attendance to see Richmond's Tyler Burton, the Spider senior didn't score until 5:22 remained in the contest, but finished with 15 points, after dropping in a game-high 26 points when these clubs met in Richmond last month. Burton had to work for what he got as his 15 points came on 4-of-16 shooting.
Fittingly for the 2OT game, there were nine lead changes and eight ties, with both sides having a chance to win before the second extra session. GW had an eight-point lead approaching the under-8:00 timeout of the second half, while Richmond led by five with 1:07 to play. GDUB then scored the first five points of the first overtime session, but neither side gave an inch all night, trading blows in a battle that was fit for a heavyweight prize fight.
GW heads to Philly this weekend for a 1 p.m. tip at Saint Joseph's, before returning home a week from tonight to meet George Mason again on February 15 at 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington after winning in Fairfax in mid-January.
