Colonials return to Smith Center Wednesday for Revolutionary Rivalry
PHILADELPHIA - GW men's basketball fell behind, 16-1, within the first four minutes of Saturday's contest at Hagan Arena and never was able to get closer than eight, ultimately falling 81-69 to Saint Joseph's.
Seventeen days ago, it was GW who got off to a great start on their home court, leading by 16 in the first ten minutes before ultimately winning in overtime. On Saturday, SJU got as good a start as they could imagine, shooting 52% in the first half and leading by as many as 22 while taking a 47-27 advantage into the locker room.
Battling foul trouble seemingly from the opening tip, GW was whistled for 14 fouls in the opening 20 minutes and had six of its eight available scholarship players with two fouls before halftime.
That didn't deter a spirited effort after intermission when Brendan Adams went on a personal 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 14 before the first media timeout. The run continued as a pair of Ricky Lindo, Jr. free throws brought the Colonials to within eight, 53-45, with 14:47 remaining.
St. Joe's bent, but never broke as they never let the lead below eight. GW trailed by that margin with 5:43 remaining when a controversial fifth foul was whistled on Lindo, ending his night and giving the Hawks a pair at the line instead of a GW fast break.
The Colonials were called for a season-high 27 fouls on the day as St. Joe's made 23-of-33 at the charity stripe, both the most for an opponent this season.
GW also had a rare off-shooting night, connecting at just 38.3% on the day and 5-of-20 from beyond the arc. Adams led five Colonials in double figures with 15 points and four assists. James Bishop IV and Lindo provided 13 apiece while Maximus Edwards and Hunter Dean each chipped in 11.
Erik Reynolds II led the Hawks with 24 points while Lynn Greer III added 22, including 11-of-18 at the free throw line.
The Colonials will now return home for their third-straight repeat opponent. The Patriots of George Mason come calling on Wednesday as the Buff & Blue will look for a season sweep in the Revolutionary Rivalry. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington.
