Men's Basketball Slips to Mason, 66-53

Bishop IV scores 23 in defeat
WASHINGTON - Looking to sweep an A-10 team for the first time this season, after finding splits in a pair of contests with Richmond and Saint Joseph's, the George Washington men's basketball team hosted George Mason on Wednesday night after bringing home a 78-75 win in Fairfax, Va., last month. Ultimately though, another split was in store as the Patriots earned the road win, 66-53.
When GW has had success this season, it has been almost formulaic.
When James Bishop IV and Brendan Adams -- the nation's third-leading scoring duo -- combine for at least 35 points, GW entered play Wednesday at a perfect 6-0 in A-10 play. When they don't, the numbers flip to 0-7. In Wednesday's loss, they finished with 32.
Similarly, GDUB stood at a flawless 6-0 in A-10 play when scoring at least 75 points. 53 wasn't going to get it done in this one.
Fortunately, GW's defense kept it close in the first, holding Mason to 35.7% shooting and just 26 points, only seven of which came from leading scorer Josh Oduro on 3-of-8 shooting, held reasonably in check after entering play notching 15.3 ppg on .554 shooting. Oduro rebounded in the second to finish with 19 points after connecting on all six second half field goal tries, teaming with freshman Justyn Fernandez to run away late.
GW led 46-45 with 7:28 left, but four Fernandez threes in a late run turned the Buff and Blue edge into the double-digit margin. The home team finished 1-of-11 from three-point range, with Bishop's game-high 23 marking the only George Washington player in double figures.
Coming down the stretch in the battle for seeding at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Brooklyn in less than three weeks, just five games remain on the docket for GW in the regular season. Up next for the Buff and Blue is a trip to St. Bonaventure for a nationally-televised tip on Sunday at 2 p.m. on USA.
