Bishop hits game-winning free throws with 2.2 seconds left in overtime
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Overtime is the friend of the Buff & Blue this season. James Bishop IV once again played the hero as he nailed three free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining in the extra session to lift GW men's basketball to its third OT win of the year, 83-81, at St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.
The Colonials' intestinal fortitude was certainly tested in Western New York as the team had to bounce back after seeing an 11-point lead with 2:20 remaining in regulation evaporate before their eyes. St. Bonaventure tied the game at 72 with 0.5 left on the third chance of the final possession of regulation after trailing, 68-57.
The Bonnies took their first lead since early in the first half on a Moses Flowers' jumper with 3:04 left in OT and led by four, 81-77, with 42 seconds left in the extra session after a pair of Flowers free throws.
But GW didn't waver as Brendan Adams, playing on the same floor as his older brother Jaylen did, nailed a contested 3-pointer on the next possession to cut the deficit to one.
The Bonnies missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and couldn't corral a Bishop miss with nine seconds left, setting up one final chance for the Buff & Blue. Bishop took advantage of the second chance and was hammered on a 3-point attempt with 2.2 remaining.
With the sellout Homecoming crowd wailing, there was no doubt that it was Bishop's time as he hit nothing but net on all three attempts to put GW ahead. The Colonials stole the ensuing inbounds pass to secure their first victory vs. the Bonnies since 2017 and first on the road since 2014.
GW dominated most of regulation, leading by as many as 18 with 8:55 left (55-37). While the offense carried the way late, it was GW's defense that stood out for the majority of the contest, holding St. Bonaventure to just 21 points and 24% shooting in the first half to take a 32-21 lead.
Bona got back into the game thanks to getting hot late but still shot just 38% for the day compared to 50% for the Buff & Blue. GW also owned the rebounding battle, 43-35.
Adams and Bishop were dynamic once again as the duo combined for 53 points, including all 11 in overtime. Adams led the way with 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 8-of-10 at the line, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Bishop potted 25 on 9-of-19 shooting with six assists.
Ricky Lindo Jr. came away with the game-winning steal to add to his double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Maximus Edwards finished a point shy of a double-double himself but corralled 15 more rebounds and four assists while limiting fellow Rookie of the Year candidate Yann Farell to eight points.
With the win, the Colonials improve to 7-7 in the A-10 and leapfrog the Bonnies in the crowded conference standings. GW will have little time to celebrate, though, returning to the road on Wednesday when they travel to Rhode Island to take on the Rams. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
