GW looks for a fourth-straight win over the Rams
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball hits the road yet again on Wednesday, visiting Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+. The Buff & Blue have won three straight vs. URI, including sweeping the season series a year ago.
OVERTIME IS BUFF & BLUE TIME
GW improved to 3-0 in games going beyond 40 minutes this season with its win at St. Bonaventure on Sunday. GW's last three victories - St. Bonaventure, Richmond (2OT) and Saint Joseph's - have all come in overtime. The Buff & Blue have not won a game in regulation since Jan. 21 vs. Dayton.
The Colonials are one of nine teams nationally to to hold a 3-0 mark or better in OT. Kansas State (4-0) and Washington (4-0) are the only teams with more OT wins without a loss than GW.
Remarkably, GW has trailed in the final minute of all three overtime wins - 91-88 with 50 seconds left in OT vs. St. Joe's (4-0 run to win), 78-73 with 45 seconds left in regulation vs. UR (9-4 run to tie) and 81-77 with 42 seconds left in OT at SBU (6-0 run to win).
JBIV'S HISTORIC GW CAREER IN PERSPECTIVE
James Bishop IV's 25 points on Sunday at St. Bonaventure moved him into 19th all-time at GW with 1,399 career points, doing so in just 74 games donning the Buff & Blue. When looking at the most points scored through their first three seasons in a GW uniform all-time, Bishop ranks sixth behind Chris Monroe (1,616), Joe Holup (1,575), Corky Devlin (1,564), SirValiant Brown (1,484) and Jon Feldman (1,472).
Bishop's 572 points this year ranks 14th all-time at GW and is on pace to be the third-best season scoring total in program history. His 21.2 points per game is ninth-best in GW annals.
IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENT IN YEAR ONE
GW won its 13th game of the season on Sunday, the most for the program since posting 15 wins in 2017-18. The Colonials are looking for the first winning season since 2016-17, when the team went 20-15 and advanced to the CBI.
The Buff & Blue are averaging 75.6 ppg, an improvement of 7.2 ppg over last year, and the highest for GW since the 2015-16 NIT Championship team averaged 75.7 ppg. GW is also shooting 46.7% from the field as a team, the best clip for the program since the 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship team shot 47.7% from the floor.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS
Rhode Island is under new leadership this season with former Dayton and Indiana Head Coach Archie Miller at the helm. The Rams have struggled in Miller's first season, currently sitting in 14th in the A-10 with a 4-10 mark, including five-straight losses entering Wednesday's contest.
Ishmael Leggett and Malik Martin are the only Rams to have started every game this season with Leggett pacing the squad with 16.2 ppg. Martin averages 7.2 ppg and is the team's top rebounder at 6.3 RPG. GW transfer Brayon Freeman was second on the team in scoring with 14.3 ppg, but was dismissed from the program last week.
URI's struggles have come on the offensive end this season, ranking last in the conference with a 0.941 adjusted offensive efficiency in league play per KenPom. Rhody is also last in the league in points per game (65.6), 3-point percentage (29.7%) and field goal percentage (39.4%).
