Colonials and Spiders meet for second time this year; Tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball looks to snap a three-game skid and exact a bit of revenge as it takes on Richmond Wednesday night at the Smith Center. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
TIME TO RIGHT THE SHIP
GW has followed up a three-game win streak over George Mason, Dayton and Saint Joseph's with three straight double-digit setbacks to Fordham, La Salle and Duquesne. The Colonials' potent offense, which had scored at least 74 points in six of the first seven A-10 games, has gone stagnant, averaging just 67.0 ppg and shooting 42% from the field and 31% from deep.
GW has turned the ball over an average of 17.3 times per game in the last three contests, including a season-high 18 twice. The last three opponents have scored an average of 19.7 ppg off of turnovers, including a season-high 26 by Duquesne on Saturday. Defensively, the Buff & Blue have allowed 84.3 ppg and seen the opponent shoot 49.5% from the floor and 43.7% from 3-point land.
MY NAME IS MAXIMUS
First-year Maximus Edwards has reached double figures in seven-consecutive games, averaging 14.9 ppg and 6.3 rpg during the stretch while shooting 51% from the field and 44% from deep. Edwards paces all A-10 rookies in scoring with 11.0 ppg, is second in rebounding with 5.9 boards per game and ranks third among qualifiers with his 46% field goal percentage.
Edwards is one of just five freshmen in the nation to average at least 11.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg while playing 30 minutes per game and the only first-year guard to be doing so. The Stratford, Conn., native has earned three A-10 Rookie of the Week awards this season, becoming the first Colonial since Lasan Kromah in 2009-10 to earn at least three such honors.
ADAMS JOINS THE 1,000-POINT CLUB
Brendan Adams scored his 1,000th career point in the second half of Saturday's contest, doing so in his 130th career contest. Adams joins James Bishop IV in the career 1,000-point club after Bishop reached the mark in November vs. New Hampshire.
GW is one of just four A-10 schools to have multiple 1,000-point scorers on its roster, joining Saint Louis (3), George Mason (3) and St. Bonaventure (2).
A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS
Richmond visits the Smith Center following a come-from-behind 68-58 triumph over Fordham on Sunday that snapped a four-game skid for the Spiders. UR is led by All-Conference candidate Tyler Burton, who paces the squad in points per game (19.0) and rebounds per game (7.7). Burton is second in the A-10 in scoring and also second in the loop in free throws, free throws, and field goal attempts.
He is the lone Spider averaging double digits, but four players - Jason Nelson (8.7), Neal Quinn (8.7), Isaiah Bigelow (8.6) and Matt Grace (7.9) are close. The Spiders have been heavy on the 3-point attack offensively during A-10 play, topping the circuit with 43% of their shots coming from beyond the arc. However, they are 14th in the conference, shooting just 29.9% from deep. UR also gets to the free throw line at the highest rate in the league with nearly 25% of their offense coming from free throws.
