Colonials improve to 4-0 in games beyond regulation this season
KINGSTON, R.I. - In a strange case of deja vu, GW men's basketball saw a double-digit, second-half lead on the road disappear late, but rebounded with a dominant effort in OT to knock off Rhode Island, 89-80.
GW led by 10 with 5:22 left in regulation, but didn't score for the next five minutes as Rhode Island went on a 12-0 run to take a 71-69 lead. But the Buff & Blue got a bucket when they needed it as Brendan Adams connected on a tough runner with 20.9 left to send the game to OT.
The Colonials recalibrated and controlled the extra session, utilizing a pair of 6-0 runs to put the game away. Adams played the role of finisher with consecutive layups with just over a minute left to ice the game. With the win, GW is now 4-0 in OT games this season, tied for the most extra-session victories in the country.
Adams finished with 22 points on an incredibly efficient 9-of-13 shooting day, adding five assists and two steals. He once again teamed up with James Bishop IV, who paced the Colonials with 25 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Hunter Dean, who notched his first career double-double at Rhode Island a year ago, found the Ryan Center friendly yet again as he notched a career-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go along with 12 boards and three blocks for his second double-double of the year.
Maximus Edwards added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists as GW shot 52% for the game, while limiting Rhode Island to 42% from the field. The Colonials outscored URI 18-9 in OT, limiting the Rams to 3-of-10 from the field while hitting 7-of-8 themselves.
GW now finds itself in sixth place in a crowded A-10 race at 8-7. The Buff & Blue will host La Salle next, who sits a game behind in the standings and already defeated the Colonials earlier this month. Tip time from Smith Center on Saturday is scheduled for 6 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.
