Bishop leads four in double figures as GW wins third straight
WASHINGTON - With March starring the college basketball world straight in the eyes, GW men's basketball picked a perfect time to engage in one of its most prolific scoring stretches of the season, embarking on a 19-3 run midway through the second half to turn what was a close four-point game into a 20-point rout, on its way to a thorough 92-85 win against La Salle, avenging an earlier loss in Philly this season.
It's a street fight in the A-10 standings as teams jostle for seeding ahead of the conference tournament in less than two weeks, and GW did itself a significant favor putting distance between them and the Explorers, with the Buff and Blue now 9-7 in conference play as La Salle drops to 7-9.
As it's been all season, it was the league's leading scorer and a front runner for Conference Player of the Year honors, James Bishop IV, who put on another sterling offensive show. Bishop finished with game-highs of 29 points and nine assists, continuing his dominance against A-10 defenses as a premier playmaker, distributor and scorer at all three levels. His 29 came on 10-of-19 field goals, 4-of-6 threes and 5-of-6 at the line, while logging another whopping 38:23 minutes.
Bishop had his boys in the front court back him too on Saturday night, as Hunter Dean (second straight career-high of 21 points), and Ricky Lindo Jr. (16 points, 11 rebounds) combined to shoot 14-of-16 from the floor.
With the reserves on the court La Salle fought to the buzzer to account for a slimmer margin of victory than GW's second half dominance showed, forcing Head Coach Chris Caputo to sub back in Bishop, Dean and Maximus Edwards in the closing seconds after removing them for some hard-earned rest.
No Explorer scored more than 14, as the GDUB D limited the guests to 40 percent shooting. George Washington countered with a 58.6% mark.
Just two games remain in the regular season. The final road trip awaits on Wednesday at Davidson at 7 p.m. on ESPN+, before a massive showdown with league-leading VCU in the regular season finale, a week from today on Saturday, March 4 on national TV on USA at 4:30 p.m.
