Men’s Basketball Edges UMES, 69-63

WASHINGTON - Despite a scare from the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore, the George Washington men's basketball team concluded the non-conference portion of the season with its 11th win of the campaign and a perfect home mark after squeezing out a 69-63 win at home Saturday.
Once again showing off his conference Rookie of the Year bonafides, it was Oakton, Va., product Garrett Johnson who keyed the victory. The Princeton transfer did a bit of everything to escape the scare, leading GW in points (18), rebounds (10) and steals (2) as part of his third double-double of the year.
Fellow frosh Darren Buchanan, Jr. was also a wrecking ball Saturday. Another product of the DMV, Buchanan finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while relentlessly attacking the rim and drawing nine UMES fouls. The parade to the free throw line saw GW shoot 35 free throws, a whopping advantage earned the hard way by putting pressure on at the rim all game. The Revolutionaries paved the path to the win by knocking down 21 freebies, while only sending the Hawks to the stripe a dozen times. GW also outdid UMES inside, doubling-up their guests in paint points, 36-18.
UMES' Troy Hupstead was sensational in defeat with 25 points in 27:42 of floor time, though GW big Babatunde Akingbola had arguably the greatest impact. His team was a +15 while the Nigerian center was on the court, as he did damage on both ends with nine points and seven rebounds (five offensive), with four blocks on the other end.
The GW Revs now lock in on A-10 play, which commences at the Smith Center on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tip against last season's upstart surprise team, the Fordham Rams. The game will be carried live on ESPN+.
