Men's Basketball Slips to Fordham in A-10 Opening 3OT Thriller, 119-113
1/3/2024 10:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - With a perfect home record in 2023-24, but having lost two-straight to Fordham entering Wednesday night's A-10 opener at Smith Center, something had to give for the GW men's basketball team. It took three overtime sessions to sort it all out. Plus there was GW's perfect record (6-0) in OT contests under Chris Caputo on the line, including 2-0 in the extra, extra session. A third OT at GW in the Caputo era was unprecedented and ultimately spelled doom for the Buff & Blue.
55 minutes after it started, Fordham's streak continued while GW will have to start anew. The Rams pulled away to take a seven-point lead in the third OT, the largest advantage either side had since the first half, as the game's final 35 minutes were played with the teams within two possessions.
Perhaps the biggest differentiator at the end was the depth of the visitors, as despite two players having fouled out, Fordham came five-deep off the bench and saw its reserves outscore GW's bench 43-2. The Revolutionaries saw four players log 50+ minutes, topped by first-year Darren Buchanan Jr., who was sensational in a career-best, 38-point outing.
GW survived Fordham possessions both at the end of regulation and again at the end of the first five-minute overtime, only to play the role of equalizer at the end of the second OT. In his career night, Buchanan's biggest bucket of his 25 points that came after halftime was a slam with 0.9 left in double OT after he ducked in underneath the rim to send the affair to its third additional stanza. The play was setup after James Bishop IV intentionally missed a free throw try down two, allowing GW to gain possession for the game-tying set-up.
Babatunde Akingbola checked in with his first career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds), while Maximus Edwards equaled the double-double feat with 13 and 11. If it wasn't for Buchanan's night, James Bishop IV would've had his name in the headline. The reigning A-10 scoring champ poured in an efficient 32 points on 21 shots, while dishing a game-high tying six dimes and slapping three blocks on the other end.
Fordham made its mark from distance, canning 19-of-42 threes for a .452 clip, better than its success rate inside the arc, with Japhet Medor (24 points), Antrell Charlton (22) and Elijah Gray (22 off the bench), combining for 12-of-24 triples.
Up next for the GW Revs is a nationally-televised clash with perennial A-10 powerhouse and 2023 conference champion VCU in Richmond, Saturday at 4 p.m. on USA Network.
