Bishop's Buzzer Beater Bests VCU, 84-82

RICHMOND, Va. - James Bishop IV added another signature moment to his illustrious career, nailing a game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds remaining to lift GW past VCU, 84-82, on Saturday night at the Siegel Center.
After GW inbounded with 11.7 seconds to go, Bishop drove the ball to the short corner, spun to create just enough separation and saw his off-balance leaner tickle the twine over the Rams' Zeb Jackson. The basket gave him 28 points for the day, including 23 of GW's 51 points after halftime.
The Revolutionaries started slow, shooting just 36% in the opening half, but went into the locker room down just two, 35-33.
The second half was a completely different story as GW shot a blistering 81% (17-of-21) from the field, including making its final nine shots over the final seven minutes of the contest.
Following a triple-overtime heartbreaker on Wednesday that featured 18 ties and 24 lead changes, Saturday was equally as heart-pumping with 13 stalemates and 19 more lead changes.
The game was played within one possession from the 17-minute mark of the second half until a dunk from Garrett Johnson with 1:01 remaining put GW ahead, 80-75. VCU, though, got five-straight free throws, aided by a GW turnover in the middle to even the game.
Johnson calmly made two free throws with 31 seconds left and VCU's Joe Bamisile then tied the game with 11 seconds left on a second-chance jumper, setting the stage for Bishop's heroics.
While it was Bishop that served the role of finisher, Maximus Edwards kept GW in the game in the first half with 13 of his 20 points coming before halftime. Johnson added 14 to give the Revolutionaries three in double digits.
GW shot a season-best 55% from the floor and limited the Rams to just 42% on the day. The win was only the second at the Siegel Center in program history and snapped a six-game skid to the reigning A-10 Champs.
After two nailbiter affairs, GW will now have the benefit of a week off before returning to action next weekend for a pair of games in three days, both at the Charles E. Smith Center. First up is a 2 p.m. tip with Davidson next Saturday on Monumental Sports Network.
