WASHINGTON - Off to its best start in seven years, GW men's basketball wraps up its four-game homestand with a 1 p.m. tip against New Hampshire on Saturday with live coverage on ESPN+.
WINNING WITH DEFENSE
GW has limited all three of its opponents to 40% shooting or worse to begin the year, ranking first in the A-10 and 12th nationally in field goal percentage defense at 33.2%. The Revolutionaries are seventh in the country in 2-point defense, limiting their opponents to just 37.3% inside the arc.
Tuesday vs. Hofstra was the ninth time under Caputo that GW has held its opponent under 40% shooting as they remained a perfect 9-0 in such games.
NOT UP IN HERE
Babatunde Akingbola highlighted the defensive effort with two steals and three blocks on Tuesday. He has registered multiple blocks in each game this year. Akingbola is 10th nationally with nine blocks and sixth in the NCAA with 3.0 swats per game. As a team, the Revolutionaries have averaged 6.0 blocks per game this season, best in the A-10 and 29th nationally.
GW also registered 11 steals against Hofstra, its first game with double-digit steals since tallying 10 swipes against VCU on Jan. 13, 2021. GW has averaged 8.7 steals per game, 90th nationally.
FRESH PERSPECTIVE
GW saw three first-years reach double digits in Tuesday's win over Hofstra in Garrett Johnson (15 points), Trey Autry (10) and Darren Buchanan Jr. (10). It marked the first time that three GW freshmen scored double digits in the same game since Feb. 8, 2020 (Jameer Nelson Jr., Chase Paar, Shawn Walker).
Through three games, GW has received 46% of its offense (118 of 255 points) from freshmen and redshirt freshmen. Autry and Johnson have started the first three games and became the first pair of freshman to start the opener for the Buff & Blue since 2012-13 (Joe McDonald and Patricio Garino).
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS
New Hampshire enters a new era with former Bucknell coach Nathan Davis taking over the program following eight years coaching the Bison. UNH opened the year with a close 83-72 loss at Syracuse, but has since run off wins over Non-DI Curry (115-38) and Brown (82-64).
Clarence Daniels, who scored 11 points with five rebounds in last season's meeting with GW, paces UNH with 23.0 ppg on 55% shooting, including 53% from beyond the arc. Daniels is coming off a career day against Brown with 36 points (10-15 FG, 5-8 3s) and nine rebounds on Tuesday.
UNH has played with a quick tempo this year, ranking 61st in KenPom adjusted tempo, and have taken 44% of their shots from beyond the arc while connecting at a 38% clip.
