WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball overcame a slow start to win handily on Saturday afternoon, dispatching visiting New Hampshire, 79-67, for its fourth-straight victory.
The Buff & Blue were unable to find their rhythm out of the gate, missing 13 of their first 15 shots in the opening nine minutes to fall behind by their largest deficit of the season, 22-9. From there, though, the shots began to fall and GW took control of the contest.
A driving layup from Darren Buchanan Jr. sparked a tremendous 18-0 stretch for the Buff & Blue, who over the next seven-plus minutes made eight of their nine field goals and scored 22 of the next 23 points to assume a 30-23 cushion.
The offensive flow continued into the second stanza as GW made its first seven shots of the half to take its largest lead of the game, 50-36, just four minutes into the second half. UNH showed some spunk though, rallying to close the gap to one, 55-54, just five minutes later.
That's when it became James Bishop IV time as the A-10 Player of the Year candidate, who had yet to score to that point while dishing out a team-best eight assists, scored 12 of GW's next 14 points to push the lead to 68-61. UNH got no closer in the final five minutes to cap off GW's first 4-0 start since 2015-16.
Garrett Johnson led four Revolutionaries in double figures with his first career double-double, tallying 18 points and 10 rebounds on the backs of a 4-for-7 day from beyond the arc. Bishop's massive line finished with 14 points, eight assists and seven rebounds while Maximus Edwards (12 points, five rebounds three assists) and Buchanan (10 points, six rebounds) also tallied double digits.
First-years Jacoi Hutchinson and Trey Autry chipped in nine points apiece and Babatunde Akingbola, one of the nation's top shot blockers through two weeks, swatted five Wildcat attempts in addition to posting seven points.
GW rallied to shoot 44.6% in the game while its conference-leading field goal percentage defense limited New Hampshire to 36% overall and just 4-of-31 (12.9%) from beyond the arc.
GW now heads on the road for the first time all season to take part in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship next weekend. The three-game tournament starts on Friday at 7 p.m. when the GW Revs take on Ohio. Live coverage will be available on FloHoops.
