NASSAU, Bahamas - GW men's basketball continued its perfect start to the 2023-24 season with a scintillating 99-94 double overtime victory over Ohio in the opening round of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship. With the win, the Revolutionaries advance to the semifinals on Saturday night at 7 p.m. vs. UIC.
GW got a trio of 20-point performances in the triumph from James Bishop IV, Darren Buchanan Jr. and Maximus Edwards, each taking their turn in being the go-to for the Buff & Blue. It marked the first time since at least 2010 that GW had three players score 20 or more points in the same game.
Buchanan Jr. led the charge in the opening half when he scored 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting as GW built a 10-point lead, 44-34, heading into intermission. Buchanan ended up with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, adding six rebounds and two assists.
GW had to withstand an Ohio charge in the second half as the Bobcats hit four straight threes to turn a five-point deficit into their largest lead of the game, 71-67, with just over three minutes remaining. Bishop hit a critical 3-pointer on the ensuing possession and then saw Edwards and Garrett Johnson calmly knock down four free throws to knot the game at 74. Bishop missed a last-second shot to send the game into OT.
Bishop and Buchanan combined for all nine points in the first extra session, as Buchanan put GW ahead, 83-82, on a thunderous slam dunk with 38 seconds left. An Ohio free throw tied the game and GW's final possession went awry to push the game further into the night.
Then it was Edwards' turn to take over as he knocked down a pair of triples as part of a 7-0 run to start double OT and give GW the separation it needed. Edwards then delivered the dagger with a shot-clock-beating 3-pointer in the final minute to put GW in front, 96-90.
Edwards tallied a monster double-double, his second of the year, with 22 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Bishop led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting, dishing out five assists. Both hit four of GW's 12 3-pointers in the game. Johnson canned a trio of 3s as well to finish with 15 points and eight rebounds.
GW improved to 5-0 in overtime games under Coach Caputo and is on its first five-game winning streak since March 2017. The Buff & Blue will look to make it a 6-0 start, which would match the 2015-16 NIT Championship team.
