NASSAU, Bahamas - Coming off a thrilling double-overtime victory on Friday night, GW men's basketball was unable to keep up with the firepower of UIC on Saturday in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship semifinals, falling 89-79. The Buff & Blue will take on Delaware at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the third-place game.
UIC caught fire early, drilling 10 of its first 15 shots, including five triples, to race out to a 25-11 lead less than seven minutes into the game. The Buff & Blue ended up settling in and whittled the deficit down to six, 41-35, on a James Bishop IV layup with just under four minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
The six-point deficit unfortunately became a common theme for GW as the Buff & Blue drew that close four times in the second half but saw the Flames have an answer nearly every time.
A layup from Darren Buchanan Jr. with 1:49 left finally got GW within four, 80-76, but Toby Okani answered on the other end for UIC with a challenging layup to bump the lead right back up to six. The Flames then hit enough free throws to seal the game.
Bishop led GW with 22 points and six assists and has now posted 50 points and 11 assists in the first two games of the championship. Buchanan Jr. added 14 points and five boards while Maximus Edwards and Garrett Johnson chipped in 12 apiece.
UIC shot 51% for the game and canned 13 3-pointers at a 41% rate. Isaiah Rivera paced the Flames with 23 and CJ Jones tallied 22 with seven assists and five rebounds.
