NASSAU, Bahamas - Buoyed by an out-of-this-world second-half shooting performance, GW men's basketball rallied from a 16-point, first-half deficit to roar past Delaware, 81-71, in the third-place game of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship on Sunday.
GW found itself trailing 38-25 at the break after shooting a season-low 30% (9-of-30) from the floor in the first half. An early 8-0 run in the first three minutes of the second half cut the deficit to five and set the tone for a tight ballgame down the stretch.
Similar to Saturday's comeback attempt against UIC, GW kept knocking on the door of a two-possession game, but eventually busted through the door in the game's final 12 minutes.
Trailing by eight, 52-44, James Bishop IV cut to the tin for a bucket with 11:25 left to slice the lead to six and begin a string of eight consecutive made shots for the Buff & Blue over the next five minutes. A three-point play from Darren Buchanan Jr. tied the game at 62 with 6:17 remaining and Bishop scored on the next possession to give GW its first lead at 64-62.
The Buff & Blue salted the game away, ultimately making 14 of its final 16 shots and 22-of-27 (77.8%) in the second half overall to post a season-best 56 points after intermission and win going away.
Bishop was named to the All-Tournament team after another virtuoso performance, posting a game-high 28 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting. The senior guard tied the event record with 78 points, equaling a mark set in 2017 by Weber State's Jerrick Harding. He was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts.
Maximus Edwards, coming off the bench for the first time all season, scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half and matched Bishop with a 10-for-16 day from the floor. Darren Buchanan chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds as GW shot 53% overall and limited the Blue Hens to 44% shooting, including a paltry 4-of-24 from beyond the arc.
GW will head back stateside this week before its lone non-conference road game of the season on Friday night at South Carolina. Tip-off against the Gamecocks is scheduled for 7 p.m. on SEC Network Plus.
