Men's Basketball Drops Road Contest at South Carolina
12/1/2023 9:31:00 PM | Men's Basketball
COLUMBIA, S.C. - GW men's basketball was within six midway through the second half on Friday night at South Carolina, but a barrage of 3-pointers from the Gamecocks allowed the home side to pull away in an 89-67 victory.
The Buff & Blue had hung in the ballgame in the first half thanks to contributions from first-year Trey Autry and redshirt freshman Darren Buchanan Jr., who combined for 22 points before intermission and helped GW stay within striking distance at 42-32.
GW whittled the lead to six, 51-45, on a layup from Buchanan with 13 minutes left, but an and-one off an inbounds play triggered a 14-0 run over the next three minutes to blow the game open for South Carolina.
The Gamecocks hit eight 3-pointers in the first half, but missed seven of their first eight after halftime to leave the door ajar for GW. Over the final 11 minutes, though, South Carolina made 9-of-11 from deep en route to setting a new school record with 18 long balls.
Buchanan, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, led a quartet of Revolutionaries in double figures with 18 points, six rebounds and two assists. James Bishop IV was 4-of-6 from deep, posting 14 points with four assists.
Autry (13 points) and Jacoi Hutchinson (10 points, five assists) both set new career-highs off the bench. The duo picked up the slack for GW's second- and third-leading scorers, Maximus Edwards and Garrett Johnson, who were held to a combined four points on 2-of-16 shooting as GW shot 41.7% overall and hit 11 3s in their own right.
South Carolina shot 50% for the game, including 18-of-35 from deep. Meechie Johnson had five of the triples and posted a team-high 24 points.
GW will now return home on Tuesday to begin a six-game homestand when it welcomes Navy for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+. The Miracle on 22nd Street tailgate returns this year from 4:30-6:30 p.m. outside of the Smith Center featuring free food, drinks and entertainment for all fans.
