GW fell behind 6-0 in the second set before back-to-back kills from Drelling helped spark a GW offense powered by MC Daubendiek, Womble and Porter. GW evened the set at 13 before a pair of three-point scoring runs put the visitors ahead for good before sealing Katie Reifert's first set win as head coach at 25-21.
Four kills by Drelling came in set three, but a ten-point scoring run by American helped the home team to a 2-1 match advantage.
After dropping the opening point in set four, GW maintained a cushion until the 19th point, when American regained control. The Eagles padded their advantage at 24-21, but GW staved off three match points thanks to three-straight kills before American responded with three of their own to move to 3-0 on the young season.
