Drelling records 14 kills for Buff & Blue
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball opened up the Katie Reifert era on Friday night in front of a boisterous crowd at the Charles E. Smith Center, but despite some tense clashes, fell in straight sets to visiting New Orleans (22-25, 23-25, 21-25).
GW was led by junior Elizabeth Drelling, who recorded 14 kills and hit .200 for the night. MC Daubendiek registered eight kills and three blocks while Addie Feek tallied six rejections. Graduate student Bella Bowman had 11 digs to lead the GW back line.
The Buff & Blue held the advantage in kills over the visitors, 39-33, but UNO was more efficient on the attack, hitting .163 to GW's .117. The Privateers also took advantage of eight aces and 10 blocks to eke out the win.
New Orleans took control of the first set with a 9-1 run to build a 13-8 lead. GW rallied back to within a point, 22-21, on a block from Feek and Liv Womble. However, UNO took three of the last four points to seize the set.
In the second set. UNO built an early lead but a four-point GW run evened the set at 11 apiece. Five more ties and a pair of lead changes followed in the back-and-forth stanza. The Privateers broke a 23-all tie with the final two points to take the 2-0 lead.
GW had an early five-point lead in the third set, only to see New Orleans rally late and take the lead for good to cement the sweep.
The Buff & Blue are back in action Saturday night across town at American. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
