GW to play pair of contests on Friday, one on Saturday
WASHINGTON – GW volleyball will begin its 2022 campaign with the DC Challenge this Friday and Saturday. The Buff & Blue will welcome New Orleans to the Smith Center at 5 p.m. on Friday. GW will head to American on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. first serve from Bender Arena.
READY FOR REIFERT
First-year Head Coach Katie Reifert will take the sideline for the first time on Friday alongside first-year GW Assistant Coaches Justin Wong and Nicole Alford. Reifert inherits a team that features seven letterwinners, including defensive standout Bella Bowman who returns for a fifth and final season. Reifert added nine student-athletes in the offseason, including four offensive threats, a trio of setters and two liberos. A four-year starter in Buff & Blue from 2007-10, Reifert will lead her alma mater into its 48th year as a program.
WHO'S BACK
Bowman finished 2021 with 411 digs, bringing her career total to 1,456, good enough for third overall in program history. Salem Yohannes returns to GW's offense after leading the team with 210 kills as a first-year last season. Yohannes, who averaged 2.66 k/s, put together three career-high 18-kill outings in 2021, playing in all but one match for GW.
(DC) CHALLENGE AWAITS
Led by second-year head coach Ashley Preston, New Orleans will look to improve upon its 1-22 record from 2021 with eleven new Privateers and six returners. Trinity Jackson returns for her junior season after leading the team with 207 kills last season.Â
American was selected to finish third in the Patriot League preseason poll, with senior Zeynep Uzen and graduate student Carlie Fikse earning preseason recognition. American boasts a veteran-heavy roster that helped the 2021 Eagles advance to the Patriot League Championship after compiling a 19-14 record, including an 11-5 mark in conference play. American will play Georgetown and George Mason before hosting GW on Saturday evening.
