Former Fresno Pacific University Head Coach to lead GW program
WASHINGTON – George Washington Director of Athletics Tanya Vogel has announced the selection of George Rodriguez as the next head coach for GW women's tennis.
"I want to thank Andy Ruge for running a competitive search, and I am extremely excited to welcome George to GW," said Vogel. "His experience at Fresno Pacific is one exhibit of his commitment to student-athlete success on and off the court. George has the energy, enthusiasm and experience to lead our talented women's tennis program to be a top competitor in the Atlantic 10."
Rodriguez has spent the past two seasons as the head coach for the men's and women's tennis programs at Fresno Pacific University. In 2022, Rodriguez led the women's team to a 16-10 championship season record, finishing third in the PacWest Tournament, the highest finish in program history. The finish sent the Sunbirds to the West Regional final and a No. 33 national ranking following the season.
Rodriguez coached the 2022 Sunbirds to four major West Region awards, including being named the Wilson ITA Coach of the Year. In addition, the team earned the ITA Community Service Award, Maria Borodii was named the ITA's Most Improved Senior and Sanne Brull received the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.
"I'd like to thank Tanya Vogel and Andy Ruge for the confidence and trust they have in me to lead the GW women's tennis program," said Rodriguez. "The pride, excitement and the warmth of the people at GW makes it an amazing place. I'm beyond excited to be joining the GW family!"
In his first season at FPU, Rodriguez led the women's program to a sixth-place finish at the PacWest Championship after a 7-10 regular season record.
Prior to his time with the Sunbirds, Rodriguez spent two years as the Director of Tennis at the Premier Athletic and Tennis Club in Grandville, Mich.
Rodriguez also served as the assistant coach and interim head coach at Grand Valley State. He was named the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019 after helping both the men's and women's programs to national rankings.
A graduate of Ferris State University, Rodriguez was a four-year member of the Bulldogs' men's tennis program, helping the team to a GLIAC Conference Championship in his senior season.
