The Colonials and Rams will play three at Tucker Field beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
WASHINGTON - Following a season-high eight game road stretch, George Washington baseball returns to Tucker Field for an A-10 weekend series against Rhode Island. The conference foes begin the series Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., followed by games Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Coverage of Friday's contest will be available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT:
GW was unable to get its offense going in a 3-1 defeat against Georgetown on Tuesday night. Despite the result, the Colonials received strong relief pitching against the Hoyas, with three pitchers recording a scoreless appearance. Chris Kahler led the way, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings while striking out four.
A LOOK AT THE A-10:
This weekend will be GW's fifth conference series of the year, and so far the A-10 standings have provided little room for error. Currently, the Colonials are tied for second but are one of six teams in the conference with a 7-5 record. Additionally, nine teams are separated by just one game in the middle of the standings.
Davidson leads the conference with a 10-2 record, followed by GW, St. Joe's, VCU, UMass, Saint Louis, and George Mason, who all sit at 7-5. Immediately behind those teams are Dayton and Rhode Island at 6-6.
The top seven teams in the standings will make the A-10 Championship, hosted by Davidson, this May.
AWESOME IN APRIL:
As April comes to a close, GW can give credit to a pair of seniors who helped propel the team through the fourth month of the year.
Offensively, Cade Fergus has dominated opposing pitchers this month. The senior is batting .397 with 25 hits, 18 runs scored, and 12 RBIs. Fergus also has a team-leading 1.163 OPS in April.
On the mound, it has been the Harrison Cohen show. GW's Friday night starter is 3-1 in April with a 1.93 ERA. In Cohen's 28 innings of work, the Syosset native has struck out 32 batters, while allowing just 24 hits and 10 walks.
SCOUTING THE RAMS:
Rhode Island enters this weekend at 12-28 overall, but 6-6 in A-10 play. While the Rams have kept pace in conference play, statistically they have struggled with both offense and pitching this season.
The Rams strike-out more than any team in the A-10, having Kd 413 times already, and the team's .237 team batting average is third-worst in the conference. Meanwhile, Rhode Island's pitching has the third highest ERA in the A-10 (7.34) and has given up the most runs this season (331).
Addison Kopeck is the name to watch for URI. The redshirt sophomore is batting .343 with a 1.076 OPS and has hit 10 home runs.
