Wenz Tallies First Collegiate Homer in Baseball’s Loss at Georgetown

Both teams came out swinging as GW tallied one run in the first, but it was immediately answered with four runs from the home team. Tim Nicholson got the Revolutionaries on the board first with a sacrifice fly to left field before the Hoyas took a 4-1 lead.
Georgetown notched another run in the third, but it was followed up by an RBI double from Charlie Rogan to cut the deficit to 5-2. Later in the third, Cristino Tufano tallied an RBI on a fielder's choice to drive in Sam Gates, the reigning A-10 Player of the Week, from third base.
After Georgetown pushed the lead up to 6-3, GW knotted the score at six apiece with three runs in the first. Robbie Lavey pushed across two runs with a double down the right field line, while Nicholson tallied an identical double down the line to switch places with Lavey.
The offense kept flowing in the home half of the fourth as the Hoyas put up three more runs to take a 9-6 lead. After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, Rogan notched a sacrifice fly to left field to get GW back within two at 9-7. The Buff & Blue eventually worked the bases loaded for Wenz, who launched a homer over the center field wall, giving GW an 11-9 lead.
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as Georgetown hit a three-run homer of their own that gave the Hoyas a 12-11 lead. That'd be all the offense either team could muster as Georgetown secured the win in its final home midweek game of the season.
Aidan Carey was charged with the loss for GW, moving him to 0-2 on the season. Lavey led GW's offense with three hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Gates notched three hits and two runs scored, while Wenz tallied four RBIs.
GW will conclude the regular season with a road series at Saint Louis, seeking a berth in the seven-team A-10 Championship. Game one of the three-game set is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. All three contests will be carried live on ESPN+.
