WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team heads west to Saint Louis to face the Billikens in the final series of the regular season. GW looks to make a push for the postseason with two spots in the Atlantic 10 Championship still up for grabs.
COMING DOWN TO THE WIRE
With just three conference games left in the regular season, GW, along with three other teams in the A-10, will all make a push for the postseason. The Revolutionaries, Fordham, Dayton and Richmond each hold a 13-14 record in A-10 action, placing them in a four-way tie for sixth place. With just seven teams advancing to the Atlantic 10 Championship from May 20-24, only two spots are left up for grabs between the four teams.
Multiple scenarios can play out over the next few days that include four-way, three-way and head-to-head tiebreakers. Of the three other teams in contention, GW only possesses a head-to-head tiebreaker with Richmond, having swept the Spiders earlier this season. If GW were to sweep Saint Louis this weekend, both teams would finish with an identical 16-14 conference record as well. The Buff & Blue would then hold that head-to-head tiebreaker as well, but any three-way tiebreakers from there depend on the combined winning percentage amongst the tied teams. Up-to-date A-10 standings can be found here.
GATES NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK, ON THE CUSP OF HISTORY
Following a superb week at the plate, Sam Gates was named the Atlantic 10 Under Armour Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. In GW's three games last weekend, Gates finished with a stellar .636 batting average, going 7-for-11 at the plate with a walk and two hit-by-pitches. His on-base percentage finished at .714, and he notched one home run and two doubles for a slugging percentage of 1.091. That gave him an astounding 1.805 OPS against a pitching staff that has allowed the fewest total hits and recorded the most strikeouts amongst A-10 teams in 2025.
This weekend, Gates looks to continue his hot hitting and will also be in contention for a few personal milestones. Gates is just four hits away from 200 in his career, while also needing just two walks to eclipse 100 in his three seasons at GW. He's four doubles and four walks away from entering the top five in program history, having cracked the top 10 in both categories over the past two weeks at the plate. Gates, the program's all-time leader in doubles for a single season with 24 in 2024, has put together two-straight outstanding campaigns, which include over 150 combined hits and 15 home runs to date.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS
Having lost four-straight games, Saint Louis enters the final week of the regular season with a 29-23 overall record and a 16-11 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Billikens, who are led by skipper Darin Hendrickson, sit in a three-way tie for third place in the A-10 standings. Hendrickson has been with SLU for 18 seasons, winning 547 games with the Billikens and amassing 882 victories in his 26 combined years of collegiate head coaching experience.
Saint Louis' offense is led by Riley Iffrig, who's batting .346 with a team-best 64 hits on the year. Iffrig also leads the club with 52 RBI and holds a slugging percentage of .551. Hank Gomric is the only other Billiken with a batting average above 300 with a .311 mark. He's tallied 52 hits, 31 runs scored and 34 RBI. On the mound, Owen Kelly leads the team with 13 starts. He's amassed a 5-2 record and a 4.78 ERA in 69.2 combined innings pitched. He leads the team with 70 strikeouts and holds opposing hitters to a .266 average.
