Watkinson nets hat trick
WASHINGTON – A Duquesne goal with 25 seconds on the clock was the decision-maker in GW lacrosse's 15-14 loss to the Dukes on Saturday.
GW and Duquesne battled back-and-forth at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field, with six ties throughout the 60 minutes of action. The Dukes jumped ahead to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 5-2 in the opening minutes of the second. The Buff & Blue went on to outscore the visitors 4-2 thanks to a pair of tallies from Sophia Watkinson and scores from Maddy O'Brien and Ashley Geyer. Â
After the break, Tori Hampton and Kendall Lambert quickly connected for the first goal of the third quarter to tie the contest at seven. This time, GW outscored the Dukes 4-2 in the final 12 minutes of the third frame to take a 12-9 advantage into the fourth.
After Duquense trimmed GW's lead to two off an opening fourth-quarter goal, Alana Greene and Phoebe Mullarkey potted a pair for GW, giving the home team the largest lead of the afternoon at 14-10. Duquesne then found its offensive rhythm, scoring five unanswered, including the game-winner with 25 seconds remaining in regulation, to take home the 15-14 victory.
Five student-athletes registered multi-goal games for GW, including Watkinson (3), Mullarkey (2), Greene (2), O'Brien (2) and Lambert (2). Hampton tallied a career-high four assists on the day and registered three shots, putting one on net. Megan Patrick made 13 saves on 28 shots faced.
