Mullarkey nets third career hat trick
WASHINGTON – In its final regular-season matchup of the season, GW lacrosse rallied past the VCU Rams for a 13-8 win at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field on Saturday.
After honoring its graduating class in a pregame ceremony, senior co-captains Tori Hampton and Kendall Lambert tallied the game's first goals before Amber Germer added a third to help the home team to an early 3-0 lead. VCU and GW each registered a pair of goals to end the first quarter, setting up for what would be a tightly-contested game the rest of the way.
VCU tallied two of the three goals scored in the second quarter, with GW scoring in the final minute of the first half to maintain a 6-4 lead heading into the break.
After the Rams put two in the back of the net to tie the game at 6, GW responded with three-straight scores from Katelyn Walker, Alana Greene and Phoebe Mullarkey, helping the Buff & Blue to another lead, one that they would not relinquish. Â
In the fourth quarter, a 4-0 scoring run pushed GW to its largest lead of the afternoon at 13-7, giving VCU just three minutes on the clock to erase the deficit. The Rams took advantage of a free position shot, bringing their goal total to eight, but time expired before the visitors could claw back any more, lifting GW to a 13-8 win.
Mullarkey led all GW scorers with three goals for her third career hat trick. Megan Patrick made 19 saves in net, allowing just eight goals for a .704 save percentage. Patrick tallied a game-high eight in the fourth quarter.
