Joe Biancone drives in three for GW
WASHINGTON- George Washington baseball had a rough afternoon on the mound, giving up 11 runs and 15 hits in Saturday afternoon's 11-3 loss to the Maine Black Bears.
GW took an early lead in the bottom of the first after Tim Nicholson came around to score on a groundout by Joe Biancone. Unfortunately, GW's lead did last longer than a half-inning. Maine's first three batters in the second reached on singles off Connor Harris, and the Black Bears eventually tied the game at one.
Harris was able to escape further damage in the second, but Maine continued its assault on the Colonials' starter over the next three innings. The Black Bears scored two in the third, before scoring two more in the fifth to end Harris' day. He lasted 4.1 innings while giving up five runs and 10 hits.
GW put together a small rally in the bottom of the sixth to get the score to 6-3, but Maine's offense continued to hit late, scoring five more runs and capping off its 11-3 victory.
Offensively, Joe Biancone put together his best game of the year, going 1-for-4 and picking up three RBIs. Steve DiTomaso also continued to swing a hot bat, finishing the day 2-for-4 with his first triple of the year.
The two teams will square off in the rubber match of the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
