Sheslanie Laureano Scores team-high 15 points
WILMINGTON, Del. - George Washington women's basketball put forth a valiant effort in its quarterfinal game against VCU, but the Rams showed their experience in a back-and-forth second half, shooting 50 percent from the field after halftime to take home a 55-47 win at the Chase Fieldhouse.
Early on in Friday's quarterfinal, it looked as though George Washington had a chance to pull off the upset. The Colonials started the game matching blows with their conference rival, and were able to take a 25-21 lead into halftime. The Colonials offense was fueled early by five first half 3s, including three by Nya Lok.
After halftime, GW had a chance to deliver a knockout blow to the Rams, as the No. 4 seed went 1-for-9 to start the third stanza. Unfortunately, GW was also unable to make its offense click, going just 1-for-11 before a late three from Kyara Frames. Eventually VCU found its footing, hitting six of its last eight shots to take a 36-31 lead into the final frame.
In the fourth, GW battled back to take the lead at 42-40 thanks to an 8-0 run. However, the Rams offense buckled down late, going on a 6-0 run to retake the lead and holding the Buff & Blue to just seven points in the final three minutes to avoid the upset.
Offensively, Sheslanie Laureano had 15 points, while Kyara Frames ended the afternoon with 11. For VCU, Taya Robinson led the way with 19 points, while Sarah Te-Biasu had 17.
