Colonials capture first road win of the season
SALISBURY, Md. - George Washington baseball continued to put the bat on the ball Wednesday, racking up double-digit hits for the third straight game, and riding a five-run seventh inning to an 8-3 win over UMES at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
It didn't take GW long to find paydirt against the Hawks, with Steve DiTomaso launching a solo homer to left just one batter into Wednesday's contest. DiTomaso's homer extended the junior's hitting streak to a career-high 10 games.
The Hawks answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, and would hold a 2-1 lead going into the third inning.
In the third stanza, GW and UMES traded runs with the Colonials retaking the lead in the top half thanks to a Cade Fergus inside-the-park home run and Derek Ripp RBI single. However, the Hawks would immediately tie the game up in the bottom of the inning thanks to their own RBI single.
From there, both teams' pitchers buckled down and kept the game scoreless throughout the middle innings, but the Buff & Blue finally broke through in the seventh with a five spot. The Colonials sent its first seven batters to the plate before recording an out, and while a double play limited some of the damage, GW was still able to score five runs on three hits, while taking the lead for good.
Offensively, GW ripped 12 hits courtesy of seven different players. DiTomaso continued to swing a scorching hot bat, tallying three more knocks along with an RBI and a three runs scored. Fergus also recorded a pair of hits to give him his fourth straight multi-hit game.
On the mound, Logan Koester settled down nicely after some early trouble to throw six strong innings. Koester, who earned his second win of the year, struck out three and didn't allow a walk.
Up next, GW will open conference play when it welcomes in St. Bonaventure. First pitch for Friday's A-10 opener is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. from Tucker Field, with live coverage available on ESPN+.
