Kyara Frames scores 1000th point on Sunday against the Rams
RICHMOND, Va. - George Washington women's basketball put together a strong effort on Sunday afternoon against the Rams, but it was VCU's massive 30 to 10 free throw attempt advantage, and their subsequent ability to hit those free throws down the stretch, that helped the Rams to a 56-53 victory on Sunday afternoon from the Siegel Center.
In a back-and-forth affair, GW and VCU traded buckets for the majority of Sunday. The two teams found themselves tied at 10 following the first quarter, but the Rams found some success in the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run that staked them to a 30-23 lead at halftime.
In the second half, GW turned to Sheslanie Laureano to help fuel the offense. Laureano poured in 13 second-half points and showed a dominant effort on the boards with eight second-half rebounds as GW battled back to tie the game at 43. In the fourth quarter, GW retook the lead for the first time since the opening frame, 46-44. Unfortunately, the Rams kept finding a way to the charity stripe, as VCU knocked down eight free throws in the final 90 seconds to ice the win.
Despite the result, Sunday featured a special moment for the Buff & Blue when grad student Kyara Frames scored her 1000th career point on a free throw late in the third quarter. Frames, who began her career at Albany and scored 893 points as a member of the Great Danes, now has 112 career points in a GW uniform after scoring 12 on Sunday.
While the Colonials didn't come away with the victory, there were several good signs for the team against VCU. GW knocked down six threes, their most in a game since Dec. 21, while also outrebounding VCU 42-35 and racking up 11 assists to VCU's three.
Next up, GW will wrap up its four-game road stretch when they travel to the Steel City to take on Duquesne. Tip-off from Pittsburgh is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m.
