Colonials look for season sweep of Revolutionary Rivalry
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball faces another important matchup for A-10 seeding and bragging rights as it travels to Fairfax on Sunday in search of a season sweep of George Mason. Tip is set for 2:30 p.m. on USA Network.
HERE COMES THE BAM: Joe Bamisile recorded his third straight game with 20 or more points on Tuesday with a career-high 29 vs. Richmond, eclipsing the 26 points he scored vs. George Mason in January. Bamisile also matched a career-best with 11 made field goals and chipped in seven rebounds. Over his last three games, the sensational sophomore is averaging 23.3 ppg and shooting 51.8% (28/54).
Bamisile now has a team-high 10 20-point games this season, seven of which have come in conference play. It marks the second straight year a Colonial has 10 or more 20-point efforts after James Bishop had 11 last season (Bishop has nine this year).
YO BRAY: First-year Brayon Freeman also had a career day against Richmond on Tuesday. Matched up with the NCAA's all-time steals leader (Jacob Gilyard), Freeman proceed to post a career-high 19 points with five boards, five assists and zero turnovers in 37 minutes.
Tuesday was Freeman's third "triple-nickel" game of the season (5+ in 3 categories), joining his 15-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist game at UMass and 11-point, 8-assist, 6-steal day at Charlotte. It also marked his fourth career no-turnover outing.
GROWING PAINS: Tuesday marked the fourth time this season GW has allowed an opponent to shoot at least 55% from the field. Each of the preceding three times, though, the Colonials have responded with a strong defensive effort, limiting the next opponent to at least 10% lower field goal percentage than the prior game:
Dayton (1) 58.7% -> VCU 47.1%
Davidson 56.3% -> UMass 40.7%
Dayton (2) 62.3% -> Duquesne 27.6%
Richmond 55.6% -> George Mason ??%
In the two games prior to Tuesday, GW had allowed just 56.5 ppg on 35.1% shooting.
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS: George Mason has continued its up-and-down season under first-year head coach Kim English to sit at 13-13 (6-7) heading into the season's final week. After losing to GW in its conference opener, Mason ran off four straight wins, including victories over St. Bonaventure and Dayton. However, the Patriots have not won a game in regulation since Jan. 30, picking up two overtime victories in that span. Mason has lost back-to-back games entering Sunday at Fordham (50-47) and VCU (72-66).
Josh Oduro, who did not play in the first meeting between the teams, is the Patriots' top threat at 18.0 ppg and 7.1 rpg. He currently leads the A-10 with 19.3 ppg in conference play and is one of four averaging double figures for the year. D'Shawn Schwartz had 27 in the first matchup last month and averages 15.7 ppg for Mason.
