Bamisile, Freeman net career-highs in setback
WASHINGTON - Despite a career-best night from Joe Bamisile, the GW men's basketball just couldn't keep up with Richmond's experience. The Spiders, who sport numerous players born during the Clinton Administration, showed what an experienced group can do together with multiple years playing alongside one another.
Bamisile finished with 29 points on 11-of-22 shooting, including 3-of-8 from deep, to go along with a team-high tying seven rebounds, but Richmond's quartet of Nathan Cayo, Tyler Burton, Grant Golden and Jacob Gilyard showed their mettle with 66 points on 24-of-37 shooting, picking apart the more youthful Buff and Blue who comparatively lack the know-how-to-play-together moxie of the Spiders.
Richmond was in control throughout and never trailed, despite a first half in which GW would not let their guests pull away. Each time the Spiders tried to stretch a first half lead into double figures, George Washington had an answer to go into the halftime locker room down just four, 39-35.
The Spiders' offensive efficiency was simply too potent to keep pace with all game. Richmond hit at a .556 clip from the floor, .417 from deep and .824 at the line, in a clinic of cohesion.
Bright spots were evident on the GW side too, as alongside Bamisile, first-year Brayon Freeman was equally special. The D.C.-product netted a career-high 19 points and dished five assists with nary a turnover, while making all five of his free throws.
Now at 7-7 in conference play, GW has three games remaining to improve its spot in the conference standings. Following the Atlantic 10's decision to not make up the previously postponed game against St. Bonaventure — which will be ruled a no-contest — GDUB is looking at three teams that it has already claimed a win against this season. First up is a rematch with George Mason, live on USA Network Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from Fairfax, Va.
