Colonials, Spiders tangle for A-10 seeding at 7 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball hosts Richmond on Tuesday night in a crucial game for A-10 Championship seedings. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
UPDATED ATTENDANCE POLICY: For indoor events at the Charles E. Smith Center, in compliance with GW's updated visitor requirements, all guests age 5 and over will need to show their proof of vaccination by one of the following methods:
* the CLEAR Health Pass app on a mobile device
* a physical Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) vaccination card
* a digital copy of the CDC vaccination card
All guests must also be properly masked, and GW staff will be enforcing this policy for all events at the Charles E. Smith Center. There is no guest policy for fans younger than five years old.
GEORGE'S ARMY: There's no doubt the presence of fans has helped buoy the Colonials to their recent success. GW has won three of four games at the Smith Center since the return of fans on Jan. 30, averaging 74.5 ppg, shooting 46% from the floor and 42% from beyond the arc while knocking down 11 3-pointers per game.
GW has hit at least eight 3s in the last four home games, including double digits in each of the last three affairs. James Bishop and Joe Bamisile have notably fed off the energy, combining to shoot 46.7% from deep (28/60) and provide 39.8 ppg.
TWENTY TWENTY TWO: Joe Bamisile scored 20 points on Saturday for his second straight 20-point effort after posting 21 on Wednesday at Duquesne. Bamisile is now tied with James Bishop for the team lead with nine 20-point games this year. Bamisile has six of his nine 20-point efforts in A-10 play, where he ranks eighth in the conference with 16.8 ppg. GW is now 6-3 when Bamisiile scores 20 or more in a game this season and 5-4 when Bishop goes for at least 20.
Bamisile is now averaging 16.8 ppg and shooting 40.7% in GW wins compared to 13.6 ppg and shooting 41.7% in losses.
ALL ABOUT HOW YOU RESPOND: After allowing a season-high 62.3% shooting at Dayton on Feb. 12, the Colonials have responded with two of their best defensive performances of the year at Duquesne and vs. Rhode Island. GW has allowed just 56.5 ppg over the last two contests on 35.1% shooting. Notably, the Buff & Blue have made their mark in 3-point defense, allowing just 4-of-34 (11.8%) shooting from beyond the arc.
At Duquesne, GW limited the Dukes to 52 points and 27.6% shooting, both opponent season-lows. GW then forced 17 turnovers against Rhode Island, including nine steals, which led to 17 points. The 17 turnovers were the most forced since Jan. 11 at VCU, and three off a season-high.
A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS: Bringing back nearly its entire roster from a year ago, the Spiders entered the season with high hopes and the 19th-most experienced roster in the country. However, UR scuffled to a 3-4 start before winning six straight. After starting league play 1-3, Richmond ran off six wins in seven games, but has dropped two of the last three, including a 77-57 loss at VCU on Friday.
Tyler Burton leads a trio of Spiders in double figures with 16.6 ppg and also paces the squad with 7.5 rpg. Grant Golden provides 14.8 ppg, while Jacob Gilyard is one of the league's top point guards with 12.5 ppg, 6.1 apg and a league-leading 3.1 spg. Richmond tops the league with just 9.8 turnovers per game and is also the A-10 leader in assists (15.7 per game) and assist/turnover ratio (1.60).
