Mayowa Taiwo puts together second double-double of the year in win
WASHINGTON - Back home for some Friday night hoops against Manhattan after a challenging trip to Texas on Monday, the GW women's basketball team took the Smith Center court with a large contingent of their fellow student-athletes and student peers there in support. With their fans behind them, GDUB did not disappoint and eventually secured the 68-56 win to move a game above .500 on the year at 6-5.
While the Buff and Blue started slow and trailed 21-12 after the first quarter, the home squad got cooking in the second and flipped the script. A 22-9 second stanza sent GW into the halftime locker room with a four-point edge, thanks to a lockdown 10 minutes of basketball in which the Jaspers were able to launch just 11 shots. With Asjah Inniss netting 11 before halftime and Nya Roberston dropping seven, the stage was set for a thrilling second half.
The third quarter provided its share of highlights in a nip and tuck clash, none bigger than Nya Lok's quarter-ending heave from just inside the midcourt line near her own bench that allowed GW to keep the four-point lead it started the quarter with, entering the fourth leading 47-43.
Once GW opened the final period on a 5-0 run to extend to a 9-point lead, its largest of the game to that point, the home crowd began to smell the win.
Inniss went on to finish with 11, while Robertson tallied 13 - the final three on a banked-in triple in the closing seconds - and Jayla Thornton got in on the act with a game-high 16. Robertson and Thornton keyed a bench effort that accounted for 45% of the team's scoring.
Mayowa Taiwo, who earlier this season ripped down her 500th career rebound, continued to show why she's among the best carom-collectors all-time at GW. With another mammoth performance on the glass with a game-high 17 rebounds, Taiwo is now averaging 13.7 boards in her last three games. Her double-double with 12 points also gave her a second double-double in three games.
In her first start of the season in the place of classmate Essence Brown, Faith Blethen canned a pair of three-pointers for the Foggy Bottom crew.
Now heading into university final exams and the holiday break, GW plays just twice in the next three weeks. Wilmington (Del.) comes to town Tuesday for a 3 p.m. matinee on ESPN+, followed by another midweek day game vs. Coppin State on December 22nd at noon.
