Colonials put five in double figures in Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic opener
HONOLULU - GW men's basketball entered the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic looking to knock off its second Power 5 foe in the last three weeks, this time in the form of the Pac-12's Washington State. The Colonials had a lead late, but a scramble drill in the waning seconds led to a Cougar 3-pointer that gave WSU a 66-64 victory.
GW held possession with 20 seconds remaining in a tie game after a questionable no-call on a potential goaltend from Wazzu's Mouhamed Gueye knotted the game at 63.
E.J. Clark was fouled with 15 seconds left and hit 1-of-2 to set up the final sequence. Clark, who had played tremendous on-ball defense the whole day, poked the ball away with less than eight seconds left, sending multiple Colonials to the floor in search of the loose ball. WSU was able to grab the 50-50 ball and get it to Jabe Mullins, who canned the 3-ball to give the Cougars a 66-64 lead.
James Bishop IV got a good look for the final shot, but it was to no avail as WSU escaped with the win.
The evenly-matched game featured 10 ties and nine lead changes with neither team leading by more than eight. The final 10:38 of the game was played within one score.
GW put five in double figures, led by 17 from Brendan Adams on 6-of-10 shooting. Bishop, Ricky Lindo Jr. Maximus Edwards and Hunter Dean added 10 points apiece. Bishop dished out five assists, while Edwards grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Buff & Blue held Washington State, a top-50 3-point shooting team nationally, to just 7-of-26 from beyond the arc, but were only able to hit 3-of-18 on their own end. WSU held a 39-26 edge on the glass, primarily thanks to Gueye, who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
GW will have to quickly reset for its second game in Hawaii against Pepperdine at 10 p.m.ET on Friday on ESPN2.
