HONOLULU - GW men's basketball could not contain a strong Pepperdine offensive attack on Friday night, falling 81-70 in the consolation bracket of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.
After a nip-and-tuck first half that saw six ties and seven lead changes, Pepperdine held a slim 34-31 at intermission. The Waves hit the first basket of the second stanza, but GW roared to a 9-0 run, assuming a 40-36 lead just two minutes into the half.
The Waves responded with nine straight of their own and scored 14 of the next 15 points to assume complete advantage at 50-41 with 14 minutes left. Pepperdine ultimately pushed the lead to as many as 13 and stymied every GW comeback attempt, not letting the Buff & Blue get back within eight in the final 12 minutes of the game.
Pepperdine shot 54% for the game, including 61% in the second half. Maxwell Lewis led five Waves in double figures with 22 points. Jevon Porter added a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds.
GW shot 50% in the second half, but for the second time in as many games in Honolulu was unable to find the stroke from beyond the arc, connecting on just 2-of-11 triples.
James Bishop IV paced GW with 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting for his seventh 20-point effort of the season. Maximus Edwards reached double figures for the third-straight game with 15 points off the bench, while fellow reserve Hunter Dean added 13 points and seven boards. Brendan Adams extended his double-figure scoring streak to 14 games with 14 points in 37 minutes.
The Colonials will take Christmas Eve off before wrapping up their time in Hawai'i on Christmas Day with a 1:30 p.m. ET tip against Seattle University. The game will be aired on ESPNU.
