Colonials open conference play on Saturday at Loyola Chicago
HONOLULU - GW men's basketball wrapped up its time at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic with just its second game ever on Christmas. Unfortunately for the Buff & Blue, Seattle provided coal in the stocking as the Redhawks soared to an 85-67 victory.
Tied at 11 seven minutes into the early morning contest, Seattle scored six points to take the lead for good before locking down the GW attack in a 15-0 run that stretched nearly the final seven minutes of the half to take a 41-24 lead at the break.
Already playing without E.J. Clark due to an injury on Friday, GW saw Ricky Lindo Jr. take a nasty tumble in the later stages of the first half and not return.
Down to eight available scholarship players, GW did not go quietly, finding a better offensive rhythm in the second half. The Buff & Blue whittled the deficit, which was as large as 23, down to 12 with 8:20 remaining following a personal 10-0 run from Brendan Adams.
GW had two good looks in ensuing possessions, but both rimmed out. Seattle then was able to erase the comeback hopes with a seven-point possession as a result of a controversial foul call, two technicals against the Buff & Blue and a foul on a 3-pointer. The Buff & Blue's defense did ultimately hold Seattle to 14 consecutive misses in the middle of the second half to creep back into contention.
Adams led the Colonials with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting while Maximus Edwards reached double digits for the third time in as many games in Hawaii with 16 points on 6-of-11 from the floor. James Bishop IV scored 12 points and moved past Mike Tallent for 43rd on GW's all-time scoring list.
With the non-conference slate in the rearview mirror, GW will now start anew with conference play beginning on New Year's Eve at Loyola Chicago in the Ramblers' A-10 debut. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN+.
