WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball aims to finish the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on a positive note as it takes on Seattle at 1:30 p.m. on Christmas Day. Live coverage will be available on ESPNU.
A CHANCE TO FINISH NON-CONFERENCE STRONG
GW enters Sunday's matchup sitting at .500 for the first time this season, having dropped four of its last five games. With a win on Sunday, the Colonials can finish non-conference play above .500 for the first time since 2017-18 (7-6). The Buff & Blue's six non-conference wins are already the most since recording seven in the 2017-18 campaign. During his 20 years as an assistant coach, Chris Caputo was a part of just one sub-.500 non-conference season, going 5-7 in 2009-10 with George Mason.
PACKING THE PAINT
GW has scored 44 points in the paint in each of its first two games in Hawai'i, its most in a game this season. The Colonials have shot 56% from 2-point range against Washington State and Pepperdine and have scored 65% of their 134 points in the paint this tournament. GW is ninth in the country in 2-point field goal percentage for the season, shooting 58.7% inside the arc. That mark has led GW to an effective field goal percentage of 54.2% for the year, 49th-best in the country.
A LOOK AT THE REDHAWKS
Seattle is also looking for its first win of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, having fallen to Utah State (84-56) and Iona (83-72). The Redhawks opened the season with five straight victories and came to the Islands with an 8-2 mark and the only losses to Pac-12 foes Washington and Oregon State. SU had a tremendous 2021-22 season, going 23-9 and earning its first-ever WAC regular season title at 14-4.
Cameron Tyson is the Redhawks' top threat at 20.6 ppg, canning four 3-pointers per contests at a 36.7% clip. Tyson was one of two Preseason All-WAC honorees, the other being Riley Grigsby who averages 10.9 ppg, but has been limited to just nine appearances. Alex Schumacher is one of just four Redhawks that has appeared in every game this season and is the team's third-leading scorer at 10.8 ppg. Seattle takes 47% of its shots from beyond the arc, 19th-most in the country, but is 270th in the nation in connecting at 31.5%.
