Mia Lakstigala paces offense with 16 points in GW debut
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – George Washington women's basketball put together a valiant effort, but a second half surge by the Virginia Cavaliers downed the Buff & Blue, 85-59, on Monday night.
Year two of the Caroline McCombs era started off in strong fashion, as GW went toe-to-toe with Virginia thanks to newcomers Mia Lakstigala and Jayla Thornton, who combined for 15 of GW's 34 first half points. Stout defense also contributed to the Colonials' 34-30 first half lead, as GW held the Cavaliers to just 17 percent shooting in the second quarter.
However in the second half, UVA flexed its muscles with a relentless offensive attack. The Cavaliers, who ended the game on an 18-2 run, shot 54 percent from the field in the second stanza and had eight different players find the scoresheet. Virginia also found a way to get to the charity stripe, making 15 trips to the line after attempting only six free throws in the opening 20 minutes.
Individually, Lakstigala led the offense in her first game for George Washington, finishing with 16 points and three rebounds. Right behind her were Thornton, Nya Lok and Asjah Inniss, who all scored nine points.
Up next, GW will open its 2022-23 home slate at the Charles E. Smith Center when it hosts Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday, Nov. 10th. Tip-off between GW and the Hawks is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
